Lucca’s array of wonderfully intact historical sites makes it a must-see stop on any Tuscan itinerary and a perfect family-friendly location for Arte al Sole. Lucca’s historic center, with medieval towers and nearly 100 churches, is completely enclosed by its famous Renaissance walls, a lively and safe pedestrian city perfect for walking, biking, shopping, and renowned dining. Lucca makes a nice base for visiting Pisa, Florence, the Tuscan coast, and the scenic Garfagnana region to the north. The Lucca hills boast the regional olive and wine road, running from Lucca to the hilltown of Montecarlo. The city is abuzz with concerts and events that draw locals and tourists alike during the summer.

Camp location:

Our Lucca Italy summer camp location is located in a historic palazzo within the city historic city walls and easily accessible by bike or foot if staying within the walled city or directly outside of the walls. If you are staying further outside of the walls you may easily drive to the location, as we are very close to the entrance of the walls.

The nearest airport is Pisa, which is about 30 minutes away, and the Florence airport is an option as well as it is about a 1 hour drive. A car is not required if you are staying in the city center.

LODGING:

The preferred and easiest location for families is to stay within the city walls or close to the city walls for easy access by foot or bicycle to our camp site. If you require larger accommodations including villas, this may be further away from the city walls, but easily accessible by car or public transportation.

We have direct relationships with local holiday rental companies that have a wide range of lodging options including apartments in local agriturismi (farmhouses), villa rental, apartment rental in Lucca’s historical center, or nearby B&Bs. We are happy to provide a list of options to fit the needs of your group.

• The week begins with a historical walking tour of Lucca by our local guide. This will give you a sense of the city when you first arrive.

• Cooking class featuring the flavors of Tuscany & the famous Garfagnana region with a local culinary expert.
